Most SEO advice on the internet is written for SEO professionals, not small business owners. The result: 6,000-word guides on technical topics you'll never use.
Here are 15 tips ordered by impact, every one of them is something a non-technical small business owner can do (or hire out) this week.
1. Claim and optimize your Google Business Profile
This is the single highest-impact SEO action a local business can take. It's free, takes 30 minutes, and directly controls whether you show up in Google Maps and the local 'pack' results.
Fill out every field: categories, services, hours, photos, description (use your keywords naturally), and weekly posts.
2. Add your business to 10+ local directories
Citations (mentions of your name, address, phone) on directories like Yelp, YellowPages, BBB, Apple Maps, Bing Places, and industry-specific sites tell Google your business is legitimate.
Be exact: same name, same address format, same phone number everywhere. Inconsistencies hurt rankings.
3. Write a proper page title for every page
Your page title is the blue link in Google search results. Format: Primary Keyword | Secondary Keyword | Brand. Keep under 60 characters.
Example for a Toronto dentist: 'Family Dentist in Toronto | Cosmetic & Emergency Care | Smile Co.'
4. Use one H1 per page with your main keyword
The H1 is your page's main headline. One per page, includes your target keyword naturally. Don't keyword-stuff, write for humans first.
5. Make sure your site is mobile-friendly
Over 60% of local searches happen on mobile. If your site doesn't work well on a phone, Google won't rank it. Test yours at search.google.com/test/mobile-friendly.
6. Speed up your website
Compress images (use WebP), reduce unnecessary scripts and plugins, and use modern hosting. Test at pagespeed.web.dev, under 2 seconds is the goal.

Schema is structured data that helps Google understand your content. LocalBusiness schema, FAQ schema, and Review schema are the highest-impact for small businesses.
8. Get 5+ Google reviews
Reviews are a major local ranking factor. Ask every happy customer, make it easy with a direct review link.
9. Create a page for each service you offer
Don't bury all your services on one page. A separate page for each service ranks for each service search and converts better.
10. Create a page for each city you serve
If you serve multiple cities, you need a page for each. 'Plumber Toronto', 'Plumber Mississauga', 'Plumber Brampton', each gets its own page with unique content.
11. Write blog posts targeting customer questions
Every blog post is a chance to rank for a specific question. Use Google's 'People also ask' to find real questions, then answer them clearly.
12. Add internal links between your pages
Link from your blog posts to your service pages. Link from your service pages to your city pages. Internal linking spreads ranking power across your site.
13. Keep NAP consistent everywhere
Name, Address, Phone, exactly the same on your website, GBP, and every directory. Inconsistencies confuse Google and hurt rankings.
14. Set up Google Search Console
Free tool from Google. Shows what searches drive traffic to your site, what pages rank for what, and any technical issues. Check it monthly.
15. Be patient. SEO compounds
Most SEO results take 3-6 months to show up. The businesses winning at SEO today started 12 months ago. Start now and the compound effect kicks in.
