Website Trust Signals [2026 Statistics from 4,407 Small Business Sites]

By Jacob Feb 12, 2026 10 min read

Visitors decide whether your business is trustworthy in milliseconds. Most of that decision comes from a small set of trust signals — reviews, team photos, certifications, guarantees, and security indicators.

We audited 4,407 small business websites and measured which trust signals they actually use. Some categories are nearly universal. Others — including the highest-leverage ones — are rare enough that adopting them puts you in the top 10% of your industry.

The headline numbers

  • 92.7% have SSL — 7.3% still don't (instant trust killer)
  • 80.2% show reviews of some kind
  • 76.0% specifically display Google reviews
  • Only 38.1% have a structured testimonials section
  • Only 34.0% display certifications or accreditations
  • Only 20.1% offer any guarantee
  • Only 16.2% display awards
  • Only 13.6% have a real team / About page with named staff
  • Only 33.2% have a privacy policy linked from the homepage

Reviews: nearly universal — except where it matters

80.2% of small business sites show reviews. The 14 industries we measured cluster tightly except for one outlier: real estate.

Industry% showing reviews
HVAC91.1%
Dental91.0%
Contractors88.4%
Electricians85.8%
Plumbers85.3%
Legal85.1%
Pet services83.1%
Cleaning82.6%
Salons80.2%
Medical79.7%
Accounting78.2%
Auto75.9%
Restaurants75.3%
Real estate41.4%

Real estate at 41.4% reviews on website is wild for an industry where trust is the entire product.

Team pages: the most under-used trust signal

Only 13.6% of small business sites have a real team page with named staff and photos. This is the single highest-converting trust signal we measure on our own client sites.

Industry% with team page
Dental48.1%
Medical43.7%
Legal27.0%
Pet services26.9%
Accounting18.0%
Real estate12.6%
HVAC11.0%
Contractors9.5%
Cleaning8.7%
Plumbers7.8%
Salons6.3%
Auto6.2%
Restaurants4.7%
Electricians4.2%

Guarantees: the trades' secret weapon

Only 20.1% of all small businesses offer any guarantee. Cleaning and home-trade categories are 2–10x more likely to than the average — and they get away with charging more because of it.

Industry% with guarantee
Cleaning47.8%
HVAC45.9%
Plumbers41.4%
Auto33.0%
Contractors31.2%
Electricians25.8%
Pet services16.9%
Real estate16.2%
Accounting13.5%
Restaurants11.0%
Legal8.8%
Salons8.6%
Medical5.3%
Dental2.4%

SSL: the 7.3% that still don't have it

92.7% of audited sites have SSL. Which means in early 2026, 7.3% of small business sites — about 322 of the sites we audited — are still serving plain HTTP, with the browser slapping a 'Not Secure' warning on every page.

If you're in that 7.3%, fix this today. Modern hosting includes SSL for free. The fix is usually 1 click in your hosting panel.

Certifications and awards

  • Only 34.0% of small businesses display certifications (BBB, industry licenses, professional accreditations)
  • Only 16.2% display awards or 'best of' recognition
  • If you have either of these — get them visible on your homepage. They are nearly free trust lifts.

What to add this week

  • Embed live Google reviews on your homepage (not screenshots — live)
  • Build a real team page with names, photos, and 1-line bios
  • Add a 1-line guarantee under your hero CTA
  • Get any certifications, BBB ratings, or association memberships into the footer
  • Add a privacy policy link to the footer (also required by most consumer protection laws)

We add all of these to every site we build by default. They're not 'extras' — they're the table stakes.

Methodology

Sample: 4,407 small business websites audited Jan–Feb 2026. SSL detected via HTTPS response. Reviews / Google reviews detected via embedded review widgets, structured Review schema, or Google Reviews iframe sources. Team page detected via /team, /about, /our-team routes containing photos AND named individuals. Certifications detected via badge images, accreditation logos, or 'certified / licensed / accredited' patterns. Guarantee detected via 'guarantee / warranty / 100%' patterns in conversion-relevant sections.

Adding the right trust signals can lift conversion 20–40% on your existing site.
