69.6% of GTA restaurants have no website (2026 data)

By JacobJune 26, 20264 min read

We looked at 5,242 restaurants across nine Greater Toronto Area cities. About seven in ten of them, 69.6%, have no website at all.

That is striking for an industry where the buying decision happens online. Before someone books a table or picks a spot for dinner, they check the menu, the hours, the photos, and the reviews. A restaurant with no website is asking to be skipped in favour of the one down the street that answers those questions in a tap.

Key takeaways

  • Vaughan is the toughest market (87.8% with no site); Oakville is the strongest (59.9%).
  • With most direct competitors absent online, a fast, mobile-friendly site is enough to be the business customers actually find.

Why this matters for restaurants

A social media page is not a substitute. Instagram shows your latest plate, but it does not show tonight's hours, it does not rank when someone searches "Italian near me," and it does not feed clean menu and location data to Google or to AI search tools. A restaurant without a real site is leaving the most common pre-visit questions unanswered at the exact moment a hungry customer is deciding.

There is also a margin angle. Reservations, catering enquiries, and large-party bookings almost always start with a search and a click to a website. No site means those higher-value orders quietly go elsewhere.

Restaurants with no website, by city

The gap between cities is wide. In Vaughan nearly 88% of restaurants have no website, while in Oakville it is closer to 60%. A Vaughan restaurant that builds even a simple site is up against far fewer online competitors than one in Oakville.

What a restaurant website should have

None of this is complicated or expensive. A handful of pages covers it, and it is enough to appear in the searches your competitors are missing.

  • An up-to-date menu as real text on the page, not a photo or a downloadable PDF
  • Online reservations or a clear booking link
  • Real photos of the food and the room
  • Click-to-call, hours, and a Google Maps link, all visible without scrolling on a phone

Methodology

Figures come from 5,242 restaurants listed on OpenStreetMap, pulled via the Overpass API in June 2026 across nine GTA cities. "No website" means no website is recorded in OpenStreetMap, so the absolute rate is an upper bound; the city comparisons are reliable because the same data gap applies to every market.

Frequently asked questions

It helps, but Google ranks profiles backed by a real website higher, and a profile alone cannot hold your full menu, story, or booking flow. Treat the profile and the site as a pair.
