Every marketing blog tells small businesses to publish more content. Almost no one looks at what small businesses actually do.
We audited 4,407 small business websites and measured 5 content signals: blog, FAQ, video, gallery, and specials/promos. Here's the real adoption picture in 2026.
The headline numbers
- Only 35.1% of small business websites have a blog
- Only 21.9% use video on their site
- Only 40.6% have an FAQ section
- 60.7% have a gallery (concentrated in trades, restaurants, salons)
- 68.7% advertise specials, promos, or featured offers
Blog adoption by industry
Professional services blog the most. Visual / hospitality businesses blog the least — even though their customers are searching constantly for advice ('how to fix my hair color', 'best time to book a stylist').
| Industry | % with a blog |
|---|---|
| Dental | 56.1% |
| Legal | 54.1% |
| Pet services | 51.5% |
| Accounting | 49.6% |
| Medical | 47.0% |
| Plumbers | 43.1% |
| HVAC | 41.8% |
| Cleaning | 39.1% |
| Contractors | 38.4% |
| Auto | 27.3% |
| Electricians | 23.3% |
| Restaurants | 20.0% |
| Salons | 18.2% |
| Real estate | 18.0% |
Salons and restaurants have the lowest blog adoption AND some of the highest local-search demand. The opportunity here is enormous.
See SEO servicesVideo adoption by industry
78.1% of small business sites have NO video at all — no embedded YouTube, no MP4 hero, no testimonial reels, nothing. Plumbers and real estate (where video is most persuasive) are at the bottom.
| Industry | % with video |
|---|---|
| Dental | 28.8% |
| Cleaning | 26.1% |
| Accounting | 25.6% |
| Legal | 25.0% |
| Contractors | 24.0% |
| Medical | 23.7% |
| Restaurants | 23.3% |
| Pet services | 22.3% |
| HVAC | 21.2% |
| Salons | 18.5% |
| Auto | 17.0% |
| Real estate | 15.3% |
| Electricians | 15.0% |
| Plumbers | 12.9% |
FAQ sections: the easiest SEO win nobody takes
Only 40.6% of small business websites have an FAQ section. FAQs are the single highest-leverage content type in 2026 — they win featured snippets, voice search results, AI Overviews, and ChatGPT citations.
Adding 8–12 well-structured FAQs with FAQPage schema will outperform a year of bog-standard blog posts for most local businesses.
Gallery adoption
60.7% of sites have a gallery — but the distribution tells a story. Visual industries are nearly universal; advisory industries are barely there.
| Industry | % with gallery |
|---|---|
| Contractors | 80.6% |
| Electricians | 70.8% |
| Dental (smile gallery) | 67.0% |
| Restaurants | 62.7% |
| Plumbers | 62.1% |
| Pet services | 60.8% |
| Medical | 59.3% |
| Salons | 59.2% |
| HVAC | 57.5% |
| Auto | 54.4% |
| Legal | 54.1% |
| Cleaning | 50.0% |
| Accounting | 48.1% |
| Real estate | 28.8% |
Real estate at 28.8% is shocking. Photography is the entire pitch. Half the industry is failing on its own core deliverable.

- Add FAQs first — fastest ROI, easiest to write, biggest SEO upside
- Add a real blog if you're in a high-search-volume industry (dental, legal, contractor, plumber, HVAC, accounting)
- Add at least one video to your homepage — testimonial, owner intro, or 60-sec process walkthrough
- Add a gallery if you're in any visual category — and make sure photos are real, not stock
- Stop publishing 'specials' if you don't actually update them. 70% of 'special' pages we audit are 18+ months old.
Methodology
Sample: 4,407 small business sites audited Jan–Feb 2026. Content detection looks for blog/news links, /blog or /news routes, FAQPage schema or accordion patterns, embedded video tags / YouTube / Vimeo iframes, gallery components and lightbox patterns, and specials/promos sections.
